Hosting Service
I have read over some threads that the senior members (and VV) will not use sub-domain hosting service on money site, what's the reason for it?

RE: Hosting Service
If you mean a service such as wordpress.com where you will have a site like swong.wordpress.com then no, you should not use that for your money site.

There are two main reasons for this.
1) You have far less flexibility and control with a site like this. You will not be able to use wordpress to it's full extent.

But, buy far the biggest drawback to using a site like this is
2) The hosting site (wordpress.com in this case) can take down your blog any time with no notice. If they think you are too promotional, spammy, or any other reason, they can simply delete your site and all your hard work goes down the drain.

You are much better off purchasing a domain and having it hosted by a company like hostgator. It's really not that much. You can buy a domain for less than $10 a year. Hostgator will cost less than $10 a month. Then you will have complete control and flexibility over your site.

RE: Hosting Service
Thanks Jack!

I might have asked the question too vague.

Like I have my sites on hostmonster, but they are all add-on subdomains. As to some of you guys here, I think you guys use individual domain instead of add-on subdomains for your money site. So I'm wondering the difference, and does it affect anything?

Thanks!

RE: Hosting Service
Oh, ok

(almost) all of my sites are addon domains under a primary domain. My main money site is an addon. It doesn't affect anything as far as Google is concerned. The only thing I've found where it can be a negative is if you want to sell your site. Apparently, it can get a bit messy separating an addon domain from the rest in order to transfer it over to the new owner.

RE: Hosting Service
Hi swong,

You may have caught glimpse on another thread of an IP address issue as it relates to our money sites.

I think this "IP issue" is really only a problem when you start building a blog network that links to your money site. If you have 5-10 website that link to your money site and they all have the same ip they could potentially get all de-indexed from google.

Ohh okok cool!

so what are the available options if I want to build sites to flip, since if having add-on domains would be more messy

ahh, niktodorov, I think that's what I could have read. About the IP addess, how do you guys tackle it then?

Thanks guys!

RE: Hosting Service
I have a reseller hosting account for a couple of my sites. They all have their own cpanel and none are add on domains. I'm still learning this and don't know a whole lot about it yet.

If you want to build sites to your money site, you need to have it on a different ip address. With my reseller account, I can get each of them with their own ip address which would solve this problem.

Or you can get hosting with another company for your money sites. Seohosting has a package where you can get different ip addresses.

RE: Hosting Service
CalosAmigos is probably the one that knows most about this stuff. I haven't yet started to build my blog network so it hasn't become a problem for me yet.

On another post Vita said that you could have between 2-3 blog network sites on the same ip address but not more than that. And definitely keep them away from you money site. You don't want google to see that your linking from one site to the other on the same ip.

@Jack do you know if all reseller hosting lets you build websites on different ip addresses. Do you have to pay more for different IP's or is it unlimited? If you know that is.

RE: Hosting Service
You can have as many ip addresses as you want but it's $2 per month for each one. At least this is what I've got through my hosting with Carl (carlosamigos).

I haven't seen Carl on the forum lately.

I don't suppose he is looking for customers.

RE: Hosting Service
Hey Guys,

With regard to problems with add on domains and selling sites there is no problem at all when selling sites since the key thing is where the domain is registered not where the site is hosted.

As far as the site goes you simply zip all the files up and send them to the new buyer or you can have them hosted on a reseller account and then pick hosting from them as well.

As far as domains go then usually it is free to push the domain from one account to another on the same registrar if it is moving to a new registrar then it will cost a fee and take more time. Also a newly registered domain can not be transferred to a new registrar for the first 90 days of it's life but it can be pushed to a new owner with an account at the same registrar.

Hope that helps a bit.

(of course if it is a massive site then the moving becomes a little more tricky)

Regards Ron

RE: Hosting Service
Ron is spot on!

I do all my new domain registrations through NameCheap and use addon domains with Hostmonster and Hostgator and have never had a problem subsequently transferring a website to another person.

I usually just ask them to register with Namecheap and then the transfer process is quite straight forward. As per Ron's post above I also provide all the necessary Wordpress files and database backups (and usually help them get set up on their own host).
