Yes traffic does help in ranking as the most important factor for ranking in SERP's is just the user behaviour which Google use the most.See when the one user comes to a site and skip to another page so it doesn't matter but when the same events has been repeated by many users ultimately search engines will get alert and consider that site is not interesting or not related to specific searched phrase.So they un rank that site.And if users come to your site and claims some activity search engines will track this activity and consider your site related and useful for the users.Results search engines consider that site as an important and useful to users so they rank this site higher than others.See the actual and most important factor to achieve higher ranking is just the good user behaviour.In this way traffic plays an important role in search engine ranking.
