Kind of a big question,

In short html formatting is is the type of language that websites use, if you're using firefox just right click on any website and select "view page source" what you'll see is the html for that particular site.

There are different html tags like <b> for bold <i> italics <a hreff=""></a> to insert a live link and many, many more.
