Analysing my traffic
Hi everyone
How do I check where my traffic is coming from and how many clicks banners and links on different pages etc are getting?
Is there a tutorial for beginners somewhere?

RE: Analysing my traffic
To track where your traffic is coming from as far as region and amount you can use google analytics. One of the things it has is a world map and the countries that bring the most traffic will be darker. If you click on them you can even see state/city. If your wordpress them doesn't support the google analytics code you can install the google analytics for wordpress plugin.

And to see what banners get the most traffic you can use the max banner ads plugin from max blog press.

I haven't really used this one a lot but I've heard many good things about it.

Thanks for the reply Nik
Analytics is a subject I find hard to get into. So many 'dry facts'. Thanks for the tip on Max banner ads.

Google analytics may have many disadvantages, but it is a really good tool for beginners to familiarize themselves with tracking and starting out if they have a few sites.

Once they advance, they can move on to other more safer and trustworthy options.

Just my 2 cents!

RE: Analysing my traffic
I don't use google analytics, I've read too many times using analytics is like "sleeping with the enemy", seems a little dramatic to me but I'm avoiding it just to play it safe.

I use slimstat, a wp plugin. It's okay and will show you where your traffic is coming from.

I've also been testing out a very cool plugin called - SEO SearchTerms Tagging 2. So far I absolutely LOVE SEO SearchTerms, here's what it does:

Quote:This is the plugin you need to multiply your blog traffic in algorithmic scale.

* Increase your site's SERP by strengthening on page SEO of your blog.
* Increase the number of pages indexed by adding a special link to search results.
* Make sure all posts have been indexed by promoting the one that does not get traffic yet.
* Get detail information about what are the best keywords for your web site and blog post.

With displaying incoming search terms linked to your blog posts from single post and side wide sidebar, you will strengthen the on page SEO of your web site, therefore your SERP will be better than before.

RE: Analysing my traffic
First of all, you should focus on the number of unique visitors and the number of page views. It is important to know what page of your site users visit the most. Moreover, referrers, which are the URLs that drive to your website might be good to have in mind, as well as direct requests.

RE: Analysing my traffic
For getting an idea of where your traffic is coming from, how they get to your site, how long they stay for and how many pages they check out I would recommend google anaytics - it gives you a ton of information for free.

If you are looking to check out activity on your banner ads then I would recommend xigla.com. It supports flash banner ads and also works with google analytics.

Good luck
