Keyword Density - The index and The importance

Ok .So what's the best measurement index / formula for computing keyword density ?

(Total Keywords / Total Words) * 100
OR
(Total Keywords / (Total Words / Total Words In Keyword Phrase)) * 100

Also how important it's considered these days ? Have you guys ever experiences changes in SERPs coz of keyword density ?

And, what keyword density ratio is good? i Consider something around 5% , such as 4-5 % as a good ratio.

If you really want a formula, it would be more like this:

(total words) * (percent keywords desired) = total number of keywords

so if you have a 500 word article and you want a keyword density of 3%, it would be:

500 * 3% = 15


But you shouldn't concern yourself with keyword density. And anyway, in my opinion, the above number of words looks real spammy anyway.

The fact is that Google does not look at keyword density. It finds out what a particular piece of content is about by looking at all the words. LSI would be a better measuring stick (related words).

Find words that Google considers relevant and include them into your content in a natural looking way. We used to be able to use the wonderwheel to find these words but it's gone now. You can use related searches or Google sets.

Of course you do want your keyword in your content. But I wouldn't put it in anymore that 3 or 4 times in an article of about 500 words.
