Will using the same h1 heading on multiple pages hurt my SEO?
I will be publishing some books for reading online. I'm new at this and am a bit confused about the proper use of titles and headings.

If the book name is "Treasure Island" can I use that as a h1 heading on each page and use h2 for the chapter headings?

I've read about duplicate content problems so I don't want to take a pratt fall here. Will using the same h1 heading on 200 pages cause a problem with Google?Huh

Thanks

I would use the H1 Tag like this: The Main Headiing - dash - Chapter Heading and make the Chapter Heading different on every page. Then use the H2 Tag for a descriptive sub-heading for each page.

Google "Jerry West" or "Kim Roach" or go to the Warrior Forum with $9 and get the "Fast Attack SEO" report everyone was raving about. Tongue

just look at it like if you were creating a professional word document. You're gonna use the main title heading only once right? And you will follow the other headings depending of your content. So why wouldn't you do this for your website? Wink

You will not have a duplicate content problem at all by having the same title and/or h1 headings for every page, even if you have 100,000 pages on your site. Duplicate content is determined by all of the content on any particular url as a whole, and not just one part of it.

Jack,

I read somewhere [can't remember where now] that each page is looked at independently for page rank and pages with the same heading and descriptions were skipped so the back links on those pages were useless. Did I dream that up or is that just a nasty rumor? Just wondering. . .

Leah

RE: Will using the same h1 heading on multiple pages hurt my SEO?
Hi Leah,

I haven't heard that, but I think for CaptainCastile's purpose that could be a moot point. The way I read it is if he was afraid that Google my not index multiple pages with the same heading or h1 tags. If the content on the rest of the page had different content, Google will index it just fine. Think about most blogs. They often have the blog title on every page, and often with a main keyword like "Joe's Internet Marketing Blog" or just "Internet Marketing Blog." This would be with a h1 tag too. I didn't think he was worried about potential backlinks on the site.

Maybe he could clarify his concerns a bit more..

Hi Jack,

I always forget these forum threads are supposed to stay on topic. . . I went off on what I heard about page rank and back links and all that. So yes, you're right again.

I think Google's AI [artificial intelligence] they keep perfecting better and better every month picks up on more than we realize. I wouldn't be surprised if some older tricks and tips send red flags up instead of "working." HaHa, that's funny!!
