Do you get link juice from duplicate content?
I've heard from different sources that there is no such thing as duplicate content "penalty." I heard Howie Schwartz say this and I also saw Matt Cutts from Google in a video talking about it. I've also seen it around other places that I can't think of right now.
I think the deal is that although there is no actual penalty, multiple pages with very similar content will not all be shown for a given search. One page might edge out another with very similar content for one search query while the other may win out with a different search query. But both pages would never be shown for the same query. That arguement aside, my question deals with backlinks. Despite the fact that a page may have duplicate content, provided it is indexed, wouldn't it still provide a backlink? I wish Google would tell us the rules. They expect us to abide by the rules yet they won't tell us what they are.

RE: Duplicate content "penalty"
I have explained briefly when duplicate content is bad and when it's not here:
http://vitavee.com/forums/thread-16-post...ml#pid1197 Concerning the backlinks, getting backlinks from duplicate content will get you link juice for sure. But MUCH less than backlinks from different content. This has been found by experience, not only from me but also from a lot of other SEOers. Google never replied to one of the questions about that on their blog: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.c...nalty.html VV SEO DONE FOR YOU - Real People, Real Success... RE: Duplicate content "penalty"
From what I understand there is such a things as a "Duplicate Content Penalty" but is it rarely applied except in extreme cases. However, there are consequences of Duplicate Content like your page not showing up in the SERP because searchers want diversity.
I'm quoting this from The Art of SEO: "Links to duplicate content pages represent a waste of link juice. Duplicated pages can gain PageRank, or link juice, and since it does not help them rank, that link juice is misspent." |

RE: Duplicate content "penalty"
Here's the thing: Matt Cutts even stated that Google DOES index dupe cont, but they simply choose NOT to show it. Unless of course, they have no other original content, then they would rather display duplicate content over nothing at all...
So you can still get link juice from it, it may just not show up in the rankings. 2 Minute Google Ranking?! | Internet Marketing Advice|Affiliate Blogging Mastermind |

RE: Do you get link juice from duplicate content?
I don't think that you get less link juice from duplicate content. I think that when it comes down to it, the most white-hat way to get content on the internet and backlinks is by submitting quality articles to directories that get picked up by other ezines, bloggers, and more. When they grab your articles, they grab them exactly how they are with the resource box intact (hopefully).
I think Google is more concerned with trust more than anything and as long as you're getting links from websites that Google trusts, you'll have no problem ranking well. Using UAW, SEOlinkvine, etc. definitely won't hurt you, but I don't think it will make a huge difference in rankings. All this also depends what you're trying to rank for. Product launches are a completely different game compared to established niches and keywords. In my opinion, I would use article submission networks for product launches/new keywords/new products. But I would only use article directories for established niches by writing good, quality articles that get picked up by ezines and authority sites in the niche. Blog commenting can be used for both obviously and can be very powerful. |

RE: Do you get link juice from duplicate content?
There is a really big debate about duplicate content. I was searching on Youtube about this and have found some great videos from Google itself. You can find them here:

RE: Do you get link juice from duplicate content?
To me it would make sense that links from pages with duplicate content would pass link juice. After all, article marketing is one of the most powerful way many people build backlinks and achieve high ranking, and usually with artcile marketing, you are basically syndicating content, meaning you are submitting the same artcile across different sites.

RE: Do you get link juice from duplicate content?
I am completely agree with the Admin becuase the link juice which is comes from the duplicate content has very less weight and link juice which is coming from the different and unique content has the good weight and help to get the website ranking higher. As we all know that Google recently changed an algorithm commonly known as the Google Panda update in which they want to drop the ranking for the websites which has duplicate content and very poor back links, there are many well known websites like Ezine Article, Hubpages, and Buzzle.com which lost their traffic after this change.
