Apart from getting backing, as many have already stated, it is also very good in generating loads of laser targetted traffic, if used right!

Bookmarking isnt as useful as it used to be. I use it to index things. Ofcourse I always do one run of ping.fm for every page I promote.

I've been looking into social bookmarking lately. But I don't want to jump in before I know what I'm doing (yes I do that alot)

Any tips for a newbie? I don't want to come across as a spammer. Should I submit other peoples url's as well?

I think social bookmarking is good for link diversity. But unless you have a software to do it for you, it is mind-numbing work.

Social bookmarks are mainly used for indexing a page. If a page is not cached or indexed, we can bookmark that page and it is easily cached and also the backlink will increase..

Sadly Digg is slowly dying. It's traffic has dropped around 2x.
